The play was produced by William Hanbury, who played the Cardinal, at his private theatre in Kelmarsh, Northamptonshire, October 1774, but was never published. With this part is one of the parts of The election, an unpublished farce by R. Cumberland. Discussed fully by I.K. Fletcher, Times literary supplement March 15, 1934, and by Sybil Rosenfeld ibid., April 16, 1938, clippings of both discussions being laid with the MS.

Richard Cumberland was an author, best known as a dramatist and for his memoirs. Born at Trinity College, his father was a clergyman and his mother was the daughter of scholar Richard Bentley, then master of Trinity. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College at Oxford, and devoted himself to a life of literature.
